Day 1 – Larry

It was a lovely morning to go climb Geiger Grade from Reno to Virginia City.  Don and I did a quick tour of Virginia City’s main street then over to Jeff’s Dads home for a tour of a home full of relics.  This was far better than any thing seen on main street. Then we zipped down 6-mile canyon and started the slog to Fallon.  Jeff had ordered a tail wind but some how the order got reversed and we had a head wind.  In fact, a head wind the rest of the day, increasing to 20-25 mph after we started down Sand Springs summit toward the end of the days ride.  The day ended with serious rainstorms – fortunately, we were in the car headed to the hotel when they hit.  Will we be so lucky tomorrow?  At times we had some riders that needed a little extra help and I was happy to provide some encouragement and provide some draft as needed.  Now that did not include the climbs up Geiger Grade or Sand Springs summit.  The let me have my head and off I went.  At the end of the day I was still feeling reasonably well and after a fill up with a big hamburger stake and ready for some rest and another day.
Today’s Stats:
Miles: 133  [not bad for a day]
Time: 8 hrs, 20 mins [a bit long in the saddle]
Avg Speed: 16 mph [oh, my that’s slow]
Avg Heart Rate: 112 [did I do any work at all today]
Climbing: 5108 ft  [lots of rolling climbs along the way]

Sounds like you had a typical first day. Perhaps not enough challenges. Thoughts are with you on this second day. Will check on you this evening.

Thanks Larry for ‘a little extra help.’ Your hours in the saddle are very much appreciated by those with far fewer hours! At least Coleman is home in one piece and now sleeping like a baby!

Good luck tomorrow, and I’ll pray for a tailwind!
