My Route
I’ll be joined on this year’s ride by:
- Coleman, my younger brother (he’s taller, which is expected, but not nearly as good looking!)

- Mike Nelson, my brother-in-law, from Mapleton, Utah, who is joing us for the 3rd time!
- Taylor Nelson, Mike’s 16-year old son. You can take us to the woodshed, Taylor!
- Larry Peterson, a dear friend who, at the age of 65, can rip the legs off most any cyclist on the road! Larry’s a great friend who will be joining this little adventure for the 2nd time. Larry lives in my neighborhood in Centerville.
- Don Leslie, a great friend whose misfortune to recently become a victim of the recession has turned into my blessing since he’s now got enough free time on his hands to join us for the entire ride! Don is from West Bountiful, Utah, and has ridden the final leg from Delta, Utah to SLC several times. This will be his first time doing the “Full Monty”. By the way, anyone looking to hire a great landscape architect should call Don. He’s not cheap, but he’s the best!
We’ll be supported by my dad, Jim, by Larry’s wife, Judy, and by my sweetheart Janet, and my celestial son, Josh. We’re also supported long-distance by my mom, who is serving as a full-time missionary for the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Canada Winnipeg Mission. Mom returns home next month and we can’t wait to hug her!
The Ride from Reno, a 667 mile bike ride across the Nevada and Utah deserts, begins Monday, June 15th and concludes Saturday, June 20th at Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City. Most of the route is on US Highway 50 which has the moniker as “The Loneliest Road in America”. The Loneliest Road well describes the road traveled by each and every cancer patient.
The following is our day-to-day itinerary.
Day One
From Reno to approximately 65 miles east of Fallon, Nevada. US 395 South to
Nevada Highway 341 to US Highway 50 (The Loneliest Road in America).
Day Two
From 65 miles east of Fallon, Nevada to Eureka, Nevada. All US Highway 50 (The Loneliest Road in America).
Day Three
From Eureka, Nevada to approximately 35 miles east of Ely, Nevada. All US
Highway 50 (The Loneliest Road in America).
Day Four
From 35 miles east of Ely, Nevada to Delta, Utah. All US Highway 50 (The
Loneliest Road in America).
Day Five
Recovery day in Delta, Utah. Our bodies will need the break but I’ll be doing a 50 mile light spin to flush out the lactic acid that builds up and to keep my old, tired muscles, working.
Day Six
From Delta, Utah, to Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah. US
Highway 50 to US 6 to Utah SR 68 to Utah SR 73. Got that?
